OpenOffice is crashing when launching. I get a dialog box telling me
that files will be restored when restarting the computer or something .

I just installed Mandriva LE2005 newly with the original DVD . It was
the first use of OpenOffice.

Mandrake created the release of OOo you are trying to use. I would

If you would rather not mess about with talking to Mandrake, why not
download 1.1.4 directly from www.openoffice.org and install it. You
might have to remove the Mandrake version first but it is on DVD so that
should not be problem.

My wife just complained about the same thing on my newly installed OOO1.9.something on my Ubuntu Box. I used Apt-get to install.

She edited a document for a while and suddenly she just got a message saying that the document would have to be recovered. After several times the document would be recovered, but it would be the initial document that she began to edit.

My wife has this habit of copying web-pages into open office writer and then taking all the junk out (empty columns and advertisements etc.) so that she can use it later in her teaching. She complains that Open Office does not allow her to manipulate these bodies of text in the same way that Windows does. That is why I chose to install the latest version of open office, in stead of the default 1.1.3 that comes with ubuntu, hoping that it will have more functionality on this level.
