For Linux, you check that the md5 check sums match. The md5 sum is a command that I have found on all Linux distros that I have tried. Otherwise you can download and install it. Like most Linux system software, md5 is distributed under the GPL. With Windows, I download the zipped installation file. If I am able to extract files from the zip file, I have always been able to install without any problem. I believe the zip extractor confirms check sums internal to the zip file.
