[users] Where did it go and how do I find it if it is in my machine

What happens to a large documents when I save it. I had typed out several pages 
and when I tried to save it , it saved it as an XML document. What and where is 
it? I did it twice as I did not notice where it went the first time. I need to 
retrieve it to edit and send and other, not have it gone! I was in what I 
assume was the Word version.    I am using OpenOffice1.1.4
