In a perfect world, your supposition is correct.
First, sticky notes are *not* editing the document. They are annotations.
Second, filling in form fields is *not* editing the document.
Third, there are numerous programs available that convert PDF documents
to editable form including Kwrite (part of Koffice which is part of KDE
which is packaged with most Linux distros). This process *does* permit
editing the original file and there doesn't seem to be much that Adobe
can do to prevent it, other than some form of encryption, which, I
suspect, would be a real nightmare for their tech support organization.
Take heart. Most users either don't know of the existence of the
conversion tools or are intimidated by the steps necessary to use them.
