I may understand the issue, but I'm confused.
Why are you trying to use a browser for text processing?

I think you understand the issue. I did try
downloading firefox and am having the same thing
happen. When I open a new text document, it opens a
new desktop window. It takes a long time to load and
I'm not happy with it running this way. Any other
suggestions?

I believe your question is about why does OOo open
each document in its
own desktop window. If when you say "more like a
word processor" you
mean the Micro$oft Multiple Document Interface (MDI)
wherein each
document is opened within one Word Processor desktop
window, I read once
that such an interface is in work.
It is probably worth mentioning that the ONLY
browser in common use that
opens each page in a new desktop window is Internet
Explorer. Every
other browser I work with* uses a tabbed page
interface. A much higher
percentage of OOo users - the contributors to this
list - when compared
to the general population of computer users, employ
browsers other than
MSIE which is why your comparison didn't resonate.
