This indicates a serious problem with your system. Assuming a 510Mb system is at least 500Mhz or so, it should be more than capable of handling such a document. Does the same thing happen with OOo 1.1.4? A thing that springs to mind is Adobe Type Manager. Win98se does not support Postscript Type1 fonts (files with .PFB extension), and needs ATM to do so. However, the userguide should use only the TrueType Times and Courier fonts (files with .TTF extension) that are standard installed on Win98. Maybe some weird font substitution redirects Times and Courier to a Postscript Type1 font? Just a theory.
