In the 1.9.122 installation I just did (on win98), the installer asked permission to change the assiociation of word, excel, and powerpoint files. It may be possible to uninstall and if nothing else has messed with the values they will be put back (can't say) - and then re-install and don't select the installation option.
There is another direct way. In an open Windows Explorer or My Computer window, from the view tab, select "Folder Options". In the "Folder Options" windows, select "File Types" This will display every file type association known to your computer. Find the entries starting with Microsoft and change the ones you want to the program you want. For instance "Microsoft Excel Worksheet" is set to soffice on my computer (what I want) and you will want to change this to refer back to Excel. Now this changes slightly in every version of Windows, but this is the approach to change it.
