With the current stable version (1.1.4) the answer is no, but it will be possible to open password protected xls files with version 2.0. A "Developer Snapshot Build" (currently 1.9.122) of version 2.0 can be downloaded for testing from: http://download.openoffice.org/680/index.html If you do decide to download, please keep in mind that this is software under development and should not be used for production systems.
