With some caveats MS Access DB's can be opened for use within OOo. OOo can also connect to any other DB that is ODBC compliant.

The DB component between the stable version (1.1.4) and the beta Version 2 of OOo is very different. I understand your pain concerning licensed software - one reason I prefer everything that I use to be open source.
