     I have OOo 1.1.4 (Linux). I changed the date format to MM/DD in a 
new spreadsheet and entered 8-30 in cell A1. 08/30 was shown in the 
cell. So, it works for me.
    If you highlight the cell containing 8-30, what appears in the Input 
line? (Box to the right of the "=" icon and directly above columns C 
on.)  If there is an apostrophe ('8-30) before the 8-30, Calc will 
treat this entry as text.
