I have bookmarked the footnote special character, and put a reference to
that in the text. It's quite the kluge, so I'd like to see if someone
has a better way.

example - I want the footnote chars (*) both to be linked to the same
footnote. When I tried via Insert --> Footnote I get two footnotes at the
bottom. If I use insert --> special Character and format the second
superscripted (*) myself then I loose the link to the footnote for the (*)
that I inserted and formated myself:
Task: finish the web interface *
Task: xiyz....
Task: Correct the tax calculations *
Task: ABC
...
Footnotes:
* these tasks may require the new tax module which will is scheduled to be
locked down in QA for the next 3 weeks ...
