If you need to convert MS-Works files, Microsoft provide a converter

The Works 6.0 Converter converts word processor documents created in Microsoft Works 6.0 to Microsoft Word and other versions of Works. Specifically, this converter works with Works 2000, 4.5, and 4.x, and Word 2002, 2000, and 97 on machines running Microsoft Windows® 98, 2000 Professional, Millennium Edition, and XP.

This will convert your wife's Works files to Word, you could them open them in Open Office, you might want to put some thought into how to want her to save the files.

Hope that provides a little marital bliss

Have fun!

Hi I wrote in last week because I am having trouble accessing any wps
files. You suggested loading Open Office Beta 2 which I already had but I loaded it again and still cannot open any wps files. My wife is ticked because she has an ebay business and all her response letters etc. are wps files. She wanted me to go buy a new word program in the first place but a friend had told me about open office so I went this route. We live in a small town that doesn't have any word programs available so I would have to
order in any program I'd buy which is another reason I went with Open
Office because I could down load it. I am stuck in the mean time. Can you offer any other suggestions to help this in the dog house husband out.

So in a way your wife is right but had you said Works files at the
beginning we could have told you about having to do some extra work.
