I agree with your idea toremove all the openoffice installations for a
new clean install. It can be done relatively easily.

MS has developed a program to help uninstall "unclean" files (ones
that didn't/don't uninstall well). It is a common problem that
un-installs don't work on modified programs. They publish information
about it on their KnowledgeBase. It is called the "Windows Installer
CleanUp Utility" I also got stuck after installing too many versions
of openoffice
(I'm a gluton for punishment) ignoring partial un-installs and taking
half measures to fix it. It has worked for a few people..
