I downloaded open office because I was led to believe that I can produce pdf documents from it. Is this not so? I can't even read pdf documents I have on my system. Did I understand wrong? Or did I do something wrong?

Yes, you can produce pdf files from the OpenOffice.org package. Look at the main toolbar in any of the office application: there's a pdf icon just before printer icon. It couldn't be easier than that.

However, you need another program to read pdf files: Adobe Acrobat Reader. You can download it free from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readermain.html

Hope this helps.
