Yes, this is true for the most part. There is a difference in the formats of version 2.0 of OpenOffice.org (OOo) from the 1.1.x versions. OOo 2.0 will be able to read the file formats of 1.1.x but 1.1.x does not read the file formats of 2.0. Many people using Mac version OS X (10.2 or above) prefer NeoOffice/J. It is a Java port of OOo. At present, it reads and writes all of the OOo formats for the 1.1.x versions. It is available at www.neooffice.org.

All I have read so far about NeoOffice/J says it is for Mac OSX,
but if it is written in Java wouldn't it be platform independent?
That is, couldn't it run on any platform with a JVM?

I would like to try it.
