Thank again for the help Gerry,

Right after I sent the email I found instructions for protecting my
documents and resolved most of my issues. In my research I determined
that I was not thinking, and was trying to use OpenOffice to protect a
document that I was saving as .xls. That is why the checkbox was grayed
out.

The only thing I am having trouble with now is I have been unsuccessful
in setting OpenOffice's security to match the effect of Microsoft
Office's Read-only feature (none of the documentation I have found,
instructs the user on how to mimic this read-only feature). The only
thing I have been able to figure out is how to set it so the document
opens as read-only, but then all the user needs to do is click on the
edit button and they can do so without a password. If anyone has any
suggestions on how to get this to work please let me know.

Thank you,
Robert

Addendum: I have checked my copy of OOO1.9m125 on XP Pro and no
problem. I would look at permissions and, like I said, check the JRE.
(I
say this because I am uncertain whether or not the encryption et
cetera
is Java dependent)
