The reason they were embedded as Visio images was so the users could
double click to edit them.  My hopes were that I could find a method to
keep the Visio images in there (with the option of editing), but remove
the link or whatever is causing the multiple instances of Visio upon
opening the file. 

If this is not possible I suppose I could try having them paste them in
there under a different format.  Can you save the images as png using
Visio, or would I need a separate software?

Do the Visio images need to be embedded AS Visio? What I'm wondering is

whether you could convert the images to something like png instead.
