Since you are preparing for teaching I will hope that you are using the stable release of OOo, 1.1.5. The info you want is explained in help. Try Help > Contents > Index > Search term > Edit or Activate Hyperlinks If you are talking about any of the 2.0 beta candidates; then you are right the explanation in Help is a bit terse.
