OK, you were too slow. I'm back already.

Listen, I created a new document in OpenOffice 1.9. It consists of nothing more than an image of an apple.

I saved this in three formats: .odt .doc and .doc. (.doc for Word96 and Word6.0).

Then I copied all three onto a usb-key and opened them on a different computer using Microsoft Word 2003.

No problem.

So now I am really suspect that your problem is one of two things:

  • The image is LINKED, not EMBEDDED in your document and so it is not portable.
  • The image is a FORMAT that Word is not capable of recognizing.
