Obviously I have a vested intrest in commercial support for open
source software, someone who posts a request for immediate support
and phone # is asking for more direct help, and I think that offering
services for money is within the realm of user support (although a
phone call might have been more effective than a reply to the
list!)-- it's not like the guy was spamming the list with flashing
neon html, just offering another user support option.
I thank you sir, for you comment on my behalf. It is a rather important
issue I think and I would be pleased to see it resolved. Perhaps the
OpenSource world needs a well-understood method for letting a user in
distress say "HELP ME!!! I WILL PAY! JUST PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD
HELP ME" (I only ever accept messages in SHOUTING CAPS from paying
clients ;-) ).
Next time you may want to consider sending the offer for commercial help
privately to the poster, not to the entire list.
There are many entities providing paid support for OOo (even Sun do
that), what if for every such question we get on list 10 answers
proposing commercial support? Do not do that, it is spam (unsolicited
commercial email) for the rest of us.
BTW, if you are not already there, it may be useful for your business to
get listed to http://bizdev.openoffice.org/consultants.html

Many good points. Good solution. Thanks.
I started to say something right away, but decided to let
this run to see what the consensus of opinion might be.
The original offer of commercial support which started this
thread did not help the person requesting help at all. It
was from a person who is not subscribed to the list (evidenced
by the [moderated] int he subject line), and he neglected
to include the poster in the TO or CC field.
