The latest service pack for WP8 was SP7, I think, it patches WP8 to 8.0.0.710.
I would suggest running the latest SP, unless there is a compelling reason
not to. I.E. I can't remember but in NT4 you may have to upgrade to SP6a.
No problems with Word97 docs.
