Thanks, Tina, but apparently it only works for numbers and not for letters.

You could do this but first you would have to create a new series in
Tools > Options > OpenOffice Calc > Sort Lists > then define a new
list. A bit painful, but once defined, the list would be there for use
... Edit ? Fill > Series ... and use the new series.
