David,

What do you mean by macro interface?  I haven't heard that term before
in relation to OpenOffice.  Maybe there is confusion as to what my
question was.  In Microsoft you had an option to display the legend
and/or the data table for a chart, and I want to duplicate this in
OpenOffice.  No macros were necessary, it was built in functionality. 
Do you mean that this functionality is not present in OpenOffice and I
need to use a macro to accomplish it?

In OOo Calc, if you remove original table from which chart was
created, do you not lose the chart?

I looked at what little info I could find on macro interface to charts
- creation of chart goes like this...

1) Identify cell range to be charted.
2) Create chart.

With macro interface - it is easy to identify cell range from whence
chart was created.

I'll play around with this this evening.
