Preview a file when using Windows Explorer ? That is a feature of the OS and 
it should be possible. Does it work for your OpenOffice.org files ?

Does this mean "pasting text", or what paragraph gets inserted ?

The standard file folder is setup in "Tools" -> Options -> Openoffice.org -> 
Paths
When you have the "file open" dialog then click on the icon in the top right 
for "working directory" to always bring you back to the standard directory.
