Erasing a hard drive makes the computer considerably less useful to
the folks you are giving it to -- obviously you would have to
reinstall the OS and reinstall all the applications, and even then
all the things you have "fixed" during the time you have owned it
would be gone. -- I would be inclined to run it through a defrag a
couple of times, delete things like your mail database etc.,
I guess the other thing to think about is who is going to use it ...
if you are giving to your 14 year old nephew maybe you should just
format it! -- and give him an ubuntu installer disk :) -- if it is
going to your great aunt who wants to surf and do email she probably
won't do too much digging around your hard drive.

Any file saved to disk will only have its indexing removed when
it is Deleted. That means its content can be restored with the
right software, unless it's been overwritten out of existence.
Defragging can sometimes overwright, but using an eraser program
is a more failsafe way to go.
