With compiling from sources, you can layout the directory structure - where to place various files, etc. - yourself and in a sub-directory branch of your home directory - _not_ in system directories. That keeps your original OS installation intact and if an installed program misbehaves you know which is causing the problem and all you have to do is rm -fr yourSoftwareDirectory. It's about keeping yourself safe and out of trouble! But no doubt having to compile a large set of source files (that is, OO-2.0!) is a _big_ _big_ hassle.
