Hi Simon,

The steps are as follows:

1. Unzip the archive, which will install a whole bunch of rpms onto
your hard drive
2. Go to the directory the where the rpms are
3. alien -i *.rpm will convert the rpms to debs and then install them
4. There will be a desktop sub-directory that has the files for
integrating with Gnome etc. Go to that and use alien to install the
relevant file.

I don't know if this will produce any better result than using synaptic
unless you have a very non-standard setup.
