Jim, Don't know about Mandrake so you will have to research that yourself but I use the "Using Key combinations to insert Special Characters Under UNIX" method on page 18 of http://documentation.openoffice.org/HOW_TO/various_topics/Howto_special_char.pdf for working with the languages with which I deal.
