I know that doing it from scratch the simply way you don't get the problem, But I got into the above situation by unknown means (lots of putting list styles on and taking them off). And now I am there I can't undo it. (I presume you see how the margins shown in the ruler are not the same as the margins on the page) One think I did was attach another style to the numbering scheme.
