Oh, oh...  That old a linux may have the older rpm version 3 on it. 
I'd assume, but hadn't thought to check, that the rpm used by OOo is
probably a version 4, and they aren't totally compatible.  I went thru
some 'growing pains' of that nature 2 or 3 years ago.
