There is some confusion here... When you installed OOo you asked for OOo to open word, excel, etc... files - that's why the OOo icon appears.
If you uninstall OOo, your .doc file associations may return to word. You may have to however do this manually - not a biggie. File type -> program associations are stored in the operating system, can OOo prevent something strange happening - no. If your 'associates' have word, then you need to save the documents you create in OOo as word files. This means that you save as .doc file type. Again not hard - you can even set OOo to do this as the default. OOo shouldn't become slower over time. If you PC has done so, then I would suggest it is something with the PC not OOo. Full installation of OOo (on winXP) has ~3145 files. The number of files increased is not due to OOo. When you say 'yes' to having OOo open your .doc files, a copy is not made. The file association is changed. This is not the cause of the increase in the number of files. Defrag duration is due to many things and would not suggest that OOo had anything to do with that either... ~3145 files out of 82000 is minuscule... All in all, I would suggest that you do additional virus/adware/spyware scans to make sure you PC is not infected with something else...
