Hi Mark,
Glad you are looking at OpenOffice.org as an alternative office program.
Your problem is the associations of the files - simply right-click on
your
.doc files and choose the Open With and choose MS Word. This is
explained in more detail in the knowledgebase or the docs on the
website.
