Another thing to check: Go to Format > Autoformat and make sure "While  
typing" has a check mark next to it. If it doesn't, then click it which will  
enable it.

Go to the Auto-Correction again, click on the tab "Options"  and check,
if the option "Start every sentence with a capital letter" is  selected.
(this is in my German version the 3rd entry.).
