Updates to issues 58823 and 58824 advised that I may have a ghost file on my
system and that may be leading to my problems (others had used my file
successfully).
I managed to find out that backups and crash data were stored at:
Backup's are stored commonly here:
C:\Documents and Settings\<login_name>\Application
Data\OpenOffice.org2\user\backup
If there is a crash, the recovery file will normally be found here,
but the crash data is stored (temporarily) here :
C:\Documents and Settings\<login_name>\Application
Data\OpenOffice.org2\user\crashdata
Using this information, I found that some crash data was stored:
- on my daughter's account, under the Application
Data\OpenOffice.org1.9.100\.... folder, and
- on my account, under the equivalent OpenOffice.org2 folder.
and that I had not backups.
So I removed the contents of the crash data folders, and then tried to load
the file. But still the same problem, Writer hangs after displaying top
half of first page.
Any other suggestions?

Thanks for your advice and help. I've raised issue 58823 for the File |
Open problem (and attached the corrupt file) and raised issue 58824 for the
Document Recovery window problem.

Please post the file to your website so we can look at it or open an
issue and attach the offending document. From your description I would
guess you are waiting on links to be resolved which can take time.
If you haven't already registered, do the following:
1. To file an issue you must register with OOo by clicking the
My Pages tab and selecting the Register link
http://www.openoffice.org/servlets/Join
2. Fill in your information
3. Reply to the confirmation email that will be sent to the address
you provided.
4. Once you have confirmed, go to www.openoffice.org again
5. And click on the "My Pages" tab from which you can file and find
issues.
Thanks for bringing this to our attention. It is important that you file
any examples with the issue to ensure your need is understood.
