Which version of Open Office is compatible with Mac OS10.4.3 (Tiger)?
I just bought a G5 iMac and am looking for something to replace
Microsoft Office. Thanks.

This question comes up regularly on the mailing list. The answer is
that there are
several versions. If you install the X-11 windowing system, OOo 1.1.4,
OOo 1.1.5
and OOo 2.0 all work.
If you want something a bit more Mac like, then the NeoOffice/J port is
a better bet.
It is currently based on OOo 1.1.5 if I remember correctly. It uses
Java and Apple's
windowing system and in general acts more like a regular Mac
application.
There are other little differences between the versions that may or may
not make a
difference for you. OOo 2.0 has a problem with opening and saving files
to a server
at this point of development on the Mac. OO2 supports the new open
document
format which the older versions do not do yet. OOo 2.0 also does an
even better
job at supporting MS format documents.
I have NeoOffice/J, OOo 1.1.5 and OOo 2.0 on my Mac at work and at
home. At
work I mostly use NeoOffice/J and OOo 1.1.5 since I mainly work from
files on
a samba server. I just fired up OOo 2.0 to work on an MS Word file with
graphics
on a CD and saved it out to my local disk.
I would move exclusively to OOo 2.0 if it could read and write files
from my server.
