Folks, I've yet to get any help on this, and it'll make or break my
ability to use OO for our organization. BTW, I'm a staff of one
part-timer, and I've burned a lot of time on this already.
My problem is with hiding or collapsing certain address lines when there
is no data in that field. I've read a ton about how to do this (using the
Hidden Paragraph function with a "not" or "!" or "NEQ" condition) but the
"hidden" line remains hidden whether or not there is data in the field on
that line. So it seems like hiding works, but the condition does not.
There's no other info on that line (e.g. no other fields, no other text,
no spaces, etc.).
For further troubleshooting beyond trying different syntax for the
condition, I've tried creating a new merge document from scratch using the
same data source. That too has the same problem.
What could I possibly be doing wrong, and how can I resolve this? I
really want to use OO.

Third time lucky. I am guessing but you need an instant answer; therefore
I recommend that you contract one of the consultants in your area. Please
see http://bizdev.openoffice.org/project/bizdev/consultants.html
On the other hand, if you are patient, it is likely that someone will give
you an answer or point you to something that will help.
Here is a list of resources, some of which you may have missed:
- http://user-faq.openoffice.org/#FAQ : where many questions that are
frequently asked have been answered or
http://documentation.openoffice.org/faqs/index.html
- http://documentation.openoffice.org : where you will find alot of relevant
documentation;
- http://www.ooforum.org : an online help forum;
- http://OOoDocs.org : extra documentaion;
- http://OOExtras.org : has templates, artwork, labels, etc
- http://OOoMacros.org : has extra macros and documentation
- http://codesnippets.services.openoffice.org : has macro examples
Thanks. I don't mean to sound pushy, but I first asked this question
several months ago and only had a few answers that didn't help (they
basically gave me the same info as you've provided). Then again on the
first of this month, and then yesterday. Threads that aren't answered
within a few days fall off people's radar screen in my experience, so I
am unlikely to get an answer from those earlier posts.
I've tried all of the links you suggest and they all give the basic
Hidden Paragraph approach, which as I explained, I'm using but isn't
working. The problem is it hides the paragraph but won't show it when
there's data in the field (the "not (fieldname)" syntax doesn't seem to
work, though I've tried it numerous ways).
Finally, we're a small non-profit organization with a budget of about
$30k with one part-time staff. Hiring a consultant to resolve these
kinds of issues is just not possible. In fact, this list is one big
reason why I've tried to adopt OpenOffice software. Users can get help
almost any time of day, usually quite quickly, and there's a huge well
of experience to draw from. (BTW, I provide similar volunteer listserv
support to an open source effort I'm involved with, so I'm familiar with
how responses work).
Anyway, thanks for taking the time to respond with some good
suggestions. Still looking for the answer though...
Carl
