Thanks, rlshadow. I can print directly to the printer, and have
resolved my other issue of being able to take advantage of my printer
driver's duplexing option. But I sometimes want to save to a document
or file to print at a later time. Other merge approaches (notably M$
Word) actually write a merge file with all records merged into the
template. This can be saved for later printing, edited, etc., a much
more useable approach. Seems like OO should be able to do something
similar, instead of generating individual print files.
But then, I'm not a programmer at this level, so what do I know?

If you're printing directly to the printer, you should be able to send
it in a single step. If you're trying to send it to the printer and it's
still only going as single records, then let us know specifically what
steps you're doing, because that shouldn't happen.
However, if you're sending it to file instead of to to a printer, as far
as I know, there will be one file for each record. Not real practical in
my opinion, but I am not aware of any way around it.

Is there a way to merge a document and its data source into a single
file instead of individual files for each record? I tried doing this to
allow me to duplex print (couldn't get the printer setup to work - I've
since resolved that) but I got individual files for each record. I'm
glad it was only a small merge of 30 or so records, not several thousand.
Thanks,
Carl
