Need help as these two frustrations keep sending me back to WORD!
Poor thing :-) Nah, seriously, I remember the feeling.
I am running OO2.0 on Windows XP
Me too.
1. For a while now and over a couple of versions the Spell Checker has
been most unreliable. It sometimes does not work at all (i.e. it runs
but does not find even the most obvious of errors) or it works in some
parts of the document and not others, this seems to be related to the
style being used in there various parts. These issues effect both the
Check as you Type version and the Check Now version of the spellchecker
and all applications not just writer. If I have to I am happy to
uninstall and completely re-install. Any ideas welcome.
The thought that immediately comes to mind is - the dictionary in use is
in a different language to the language of most of the paragraph styles
you're using. It's possible to set a language for each style. Since
you're in Aus, I suspect you've got some English (US) styles, and an
English (AU) dictionary, or something of the sort.
2. I want to turn off Headers and Footers on the first page of a
document - a simple tick box in Word. How do I do this in OO Writer?
You need to research Page Styles. If you open the Styles and Formatting
window (F11) and click on the 4th icon (at the top) from the left,
you'll see a list of current Page Styles. Go to the first page of your
document. Click on it so that the cursor is on that page, then
double-click on First Page. THEN position your cursor at the end of the
page, click on Insert -> Manual Break. Select Page Break, select Default
from the drop down list, click on OK.
