Well, now I have done it! I entered the first five entries into File Associations and now I cannot start KDE! When I boot into KDE I get the message "KDesktop Error - Sorry could not find mime type application/octet-stream" and then the desktop freezes. The mouse moves, but I cannot dismiss this error window nor activate any other desktop or access the main KDE menu. I have to pull the power plug to reboot the machine.
I really don't think I erased the "application/octet-stream" entry in File Associations, but I could have. Any ideas on how I can put it back? I can only run GNOME now, so I would need the program name that runs when one clicks on File Associations under KDE. I checked /etc/mime.types, and the mime type application/octet-stream is there with a file extension of "bin". And I have all the entries you mentioned below under /usr/lib/mime.
