Hi, All--
Been using OOo for a few years now; love it, love the community.
Since January '05 I have been using Calc for a fairly detailed
spreadsheet that accounts and tracks all of my personal spending,
income, etc. It's about 1300 rows, recently split between 14
different sheets. Oh, the product I'm using is OOo 2.0 on Mac OS X
10.4.3.
I have a large number of sets of data--line items of transactions
that are summed into a total at the end of the set of rows. After
the sum row, there will be a couple of blank rows, then another set
of rows which is summed on the last row of the set. The sums are
often referenced on another sheet, i.e., on the income statement or
expense report, for instance. All fairly straightforward accounting.
My problem lies in adding a row to a set of data. I use Cntl-C then
Paste Special, only pasting in formats and formulas. When I do this
in the middle of the "range" of cells being summed, all is well.
When the new row is added as the last row of the sum, however, the
new row is not added to the existing sum.
My workaround: in thinking about this, I decided that since the new
row is being added outside of the range of the existing summation,
the software designers made the decision that it wouldn't be
considered part of the existing sum. A workaround is to add a blank
row between the set of data rows and it's sum, including the blank
row in the summation. Then, when a new row needs to be added at the
end of the set, add it between the last datum and the blank. This
way, the new row is included in the existing sum.
Here's my question:
I kept thinking that "named ranges" would be a good mechanism to use,
as I remembered "named ranges" of cells from Excel. In OOo, however,
named ranges seem only to be used in association with forms
(controls) that are bound to a database. I never saw a way of
naming a range of cells and then being able to refer to the range by
name; something defining "Dec_Consmpn_Txns = C3:C88". Does this
exist in OOo? If not, is there a rationale for excluding it?
Also, I would like to convert this to database and use forms and
events to read, edit and save new records, binding Base records to
forms on a spreadsheet. Do I have the right idea about this mechanism?
Thanks for your time.
By the way, I am not subscribed to the users mailing list currently.
I have the RSS feed from gmane as a tab on my browser that I open
several times a day. I hope to be able to follow the mailing list in
that manner. I am a registered user on OOo, though, with the name of
"marktwen".
New Year Wishes of Good Will and Good Fortune to All!
