So I either use the older version OOo or NeoOffice/J on my Mac.
There is full file
compatibility between OOo and NeoOffice/J across Mac/Linux/Unix/
Windows. The
older versions of OOo for Mac and NeoOffice/J do not at this time
handle the new
Open Document Format that OOo 2 handles as its default native file
format. But OOo
2 can still read and write the older format.
The current NeoOffice -1.2 (beta) is based on OOo 1.1.5 and thus
supports OD.
The previous NeoOffice -1.1, also called NeoOffice/J was based on OOo
1.1.4 and thus did not support OD at all.
NeoOffice can open most if not all current OD files since OD has not
been around sufficiently long now to create compatibility problems.
NeoOffice can create OD files without any problem.
There are issues with using X11 on OSX, namely access to character
input services, but as long as one lives in a latin-based world that
is properly handled by OSX. Any language that requires special input
will need extra applications to make X11 accept such characters. Thus
the importance of NeoOffice that takes all its input directly from
OSX's input services (indicated by the flags in the menu bar).
