Hi Mary Ann,
What you downloaded was a file containing all that's necessary to install OpenOffice. You need to find that file and run it. It will 'unpack' itself and create a folder for all the files. The installation will start automatically when that is done. Once the installation is finished, you should find it in your programs list.
