Don't think Appleworks will save a .doc file -- which is why in with all that software Apple bundled there was MacLink plus (see the fine print at the bottom of the Appleworks web page). It's a great option if you have an occasional need, but if you need to work in daily in an environment where all your files need to be .doc files translation would get old pretty quick.

Hi,

I want to download but only found software suitable for OS X on
the site.
Is there an older version or something for OS 9, and if not, can you
recommend something opensource that would work as a .doc writing
program?

Thanks!
Mary

AppleWorks works on Mac OS 8.1 or higher, and it's cheaper than the
MarinersPack.

http://www.apple.com/appleworks/

It's a complete office works pack - word processing, spreadsheet, database,
drawing (Vector Graphics), painting(Bitmap), presentation. It's MSO
compatiable, and it's only $79 ($39 if your a student or teacher)

It's not as good as OpenOffice.org and much more expensive - but it's better
and cheaper than MSO. :-)

It's possible your Mac already came with them - most did back in the day - but a lot of the time people just ignore AppleWorks since they might not
know what it is. Check your Applications folder.

HTH!
