Hi Jonathon again,
The document is a long list of ancestors. There
is a family name, then one or more given names
with a page number associated with each given name
or names on the extreme right. The chap worked
at it for some 15 years and wants to get it cleaned
up ready for printing and binding.
Yes, I have tried to set tabs in paragraph style, but
I'm not sure if I did it right, but whatever I did, the
moment I highlighted the raw text all tabs would
disappear from the ruler. And yes, I also turned
on non-printing characters.
I found, if I removed all tabs manually from a
paragraph, THEN I could highlight that paragraph
without tab markers on the ruler disappearing.
The job then is: how to remove all embedded
tab markers without removing them one by one.
The Find/Replace help file says \t is the code to
enter for search and replace. I tried this on a
section of this file, where I had placed some
tabs manually. Guess it didn't like my tabs as
the message was 'Search object not found'

Hi again,
I'll be wearing out my welcome, but here I go
again. I was presented with a 17 page list of
names and relevant page numbers. This was
created: sometimes using spaces, sometimes
default tabs and sometimes user defined tabs.
The whole looks like a dogs breakfast and
foolishly I volunteered to tidy things up.
My approach was to use just 3 tabs, the last a
right tab for the numbers and shift things into
place by removing multiple spaces a.s.o.
But I couldn't set the tabs! If I highlight the
text I can't set tabs, if I select one single line
at a time I can set tabs, but as soon as I go
to the next line I have to set tabs over and
over again.
So how can I set fixed tabs for existing text?
A solution really would restore my faith
in O O.
I am not sure I understand the problem here?
I take it you are working in a document here,
rather than a spreadsheet, which may be simpler.
The format appears to be a name, followed by
one, or is it more, page numbers? Are the page
numbers separated by tabs at all?
Now, setting the tabs - I take it you placed
three user-defined tab placements on the ruler?
This works no matter what text you have highlighted.
If you want to adjust the tabs themselves, then it
will be different for each one, as they are probably
a different paragraph for each line/record.
What I would suggest, try doing a Text->Table
conversion on it. Do Table -> Convert -> Text to Table
and see if that helps with the layout. You could also
try tidying up some of the space and extra tabs by
using the Find & Replace feature using regular
expression to replace 8 spaces with one tab etc.

Jonathon
