These symptoms are often due to having the wrong language specified somewhere; 
and if you are in Australia, perhaps it still says English (USA). Please 
check Tools / Options / Language Settings / Languages and ensure that the 
right language is given and that it has a tick mark by it (no tick mark means 
that the relevant dictionary is not installed).

Also check the paragraph styles show the right language by looking at F11 (or 
Format / Styles and Formatting) and right click on the paragraph in use (e.g. 
default) and look in the Font tab. Again ensure the language is right and the 
tick mark is given.
