This very much depends upon what you mean by tools and how you define
compatibility. In general terms yes, OOo (OenOffice.org) components are
compatible with MS Office (ie. Writer = Word, Calc = Excel and Impress =
Powerpoint). However, there are MS propriety and cross platform issues
which prevent OOo developers from achieving full compatibility. For
example, Excel macros written in MS VBA do not translate directly into
Calc macros written in Star Basic. My understanding is that there is
some development work being done on this. Obviously, Microsoft has no
intention of allowing Calc macros to work in Excel.

OOo is an ongoing development, which already incorporates many advanced
features, that MS are working towards adding in their next version of
Office.

Why not download and install OOo, then you can see if it meet your
needs. If not, then you can simply uninstall it. OOo and MS Office will
happily coexist on the same computer, so no harm done.

Hope this helps.
