Hi Pete,
There are some memory settings in options. Changing them may help.

What's the largest size file Writer can handle?

I created one that's 578,644 (mostly because of inserted graphics) and now I cannot load it.

If size matters, what's a sensible approach to distributing a file that has links to the graphics. The links appesr to be absolute to my computer, but are they?

Got some answers.

1) 500K is not too big. Something else is causing OO to hang when I load the file.

2) The links are relative, not absolute. When I send an ODT file containing links to pictures on my HD, the links will point to nothing on the recipient's HD unless (a) I send him the pictures and (b) he puts them in the correct folder. Right or wrong?

Thx.
