Sorry to be following up my own post, but...

Format > Character > Space = Expanded adds space after all characters in
the selection including the last as described below, but condensed
spacing doesn't appear to remove spacing after the last character, and
this is consistent with the Online Help which says that spacing
'between' the selected characters is changed. Expansion and condensation
are inconsistent and I think the expansion case is the bug, and have
added a comment on this to an existing related issue 19007.
