It seems to me that the key to your problem is the design mode button.
I'm guessing that when you click this button you are converting what you have
written from read/write to read only. Can you click the design mode button
later and do a spell check?
I am basing my thinking on experiences creating forms in Base. Changes
can only be made in the form when in design mode. Since you are dealing with
a form, I think something similar is happening.
