The advantages of Reveal Codes v. No Reveal Codes are that you can SEE formatting problems. Right before your very eyes.

For example, after a cut - paste operation, it developed that the item had errant justification in it making the document act strangely. So, reveal codes quickly shows that, and the code gets deleted. Errant codes are a constant problem when trying to incorporate Word docs, PDFs, or even a WPerf doc from a slightly different version.

This morning, we had just the above caused by using as a form a document that was about two years old. The line spacing and justification changed at various places in the document, and a quick reveal codes showed just what the problem was. I fixed it easily.

Sometimes, in long letters the headers or footers will wind up on the first page and interfere with the letterhead. Why this happens, I don't know, but it does. Reveal codes shows the problem, and you can even use a find codes command to locate where the header is in the document's codes. Then it can be deleted, changed to another location, etc.

Placement of the codes for bold, italics and underlining can be a hit or miss affair, sometimes leading to an inability to get the feature to stop. Reveal codes shows why because it tells you where exactly are the starts and stops of the coding. The same is true of hard and soft returns, types of indents, and other coding editing features.

Reveal codes is not a reason to reject OO, of course, but it looks like it's just not there. So far, I like the spare presentation for starting a new document -- so unlike Word's overpopulated blank page with what seem to be a zillion features spread all over the monitor including some idiot's idea of a help avatar that looks like a staple with big-bug eyes. What nonsense that is.

It looks like I managed either to get my subscription to this list recognized, or Eudora changed to send text only messages. Sorry for the duplication. I'm trying to switch from WordPerfect where I've become fairly proficient after 15 years.
Most important question -- Where is Reveal Codes????
I went to tools/options/OpenOffice.org Writer, and found a few items to check in View and Formatting Aids. Is that it??? I looked at a large document and can see spaces, tabs, and that's about it. I must say, a plain text multi-page document inserted from Word Perfect into OO quite well. Just a little editing and it'll be Good to Go.
Thanks.

Hello Dave and welcome to the World of OOo.

Like you I would love to have OOo with Reveal Codes. So would my wife and hundreds of other people. I would also like support for Quatro Pro files.

There is a macro as another user has pointed out. It offers some of the features of reveal codes but it just isn't the same. As many users here will tell you, Styles are much more powerful for which I totally disagree with. After using reveal codes, styles is like being in the dark ages. I do agree that styles are nice but reveal codes gives you true control of what is happening with your documents.

Now remember that OOo is a MS Office replacement and thus follows their techniques closely.

Many on this list have never experienced the freedom of Reveal Codes so they don't understand the joy and ease of fixing formatting problems in two or three seconds instead of trying to edit a style to get the effect you want.

Of course, once you get the Styles created and configured the way you like, they are very powerful formatting tools. Much more powerful and controllable than the Microsoft versions.

Good luck and I hope that the lack of Reveal Codes doesn't turn you away.
